Aurora

This isn't really something that I made, but it is an example of when sewing skills come in handy. You see, towards the end of last year I went yard shopping. A lot. In fact it was kind of a hobby for me and my sisters, and we had fun trying to see what we could buy with our spare change which surprisingly enough often times totaled $3 and some change. Now on one particular weekend when I had a bit more change in my pocket we found out about a "huge neighborhood yard sale" that we were so excited about. In fact, my s-i-l thought it was on Friday, but it was actually only on Saturday. So I called up all of my sisters and we all met there around the same time. Unfortunately, by that time there were only about 4 yard sales left, and one was more of a tiny stand of things at the end of the driveway. But, it was okay because I found a gem in one of the yard sales. It was a fundraiser and so many people had donated to it- just a hodge podge of stuff. But there on a table I saw her. A huge, plush Aurora. My sister pointed her out and we walked over to check her out. She was awesome. She had velvety hair that can never be tangled, the ability to be washed, and she was about the same size as my daughter. I foolishly asked the price instead of making an offer, but honestly, $2 was worth it. I stuffed her in a bag and hid her so my daughter wouldn't see. Aurora was washed and then waited the last few weeks before Christmas stuffed in a closet. Now, I think I knew before I bought her that she had a popped seam at the back of her neck, and I could have forgotten because at the end of last year I had a lot on my plate, but I was less than happy when I pulled her out to wrap her and found that popped seam. I should have fixed it then, but something preoccupied me and before I knew it, she was wrapped. Fast forward to Christmas when Lucy opened the box was so incredibly excited to find Aurora, she pulled her out of the box and danced all around with her. But thing after thing kept me from fixing it and before I knew it, it was February. Lucy was playing with Aurora own stairs when she finally noticed the seam.

She was very concerned as she showed me the "owie" on her doll, so I finally pulled out my needle and thread and fixed her right up. It took less than 5 minutes.

But all it fine in the land of Lucy and Aurora, and she still loves that doll. They ply ring around the rosies, and have a sleep over every night in Lucy's big girl bed. What a great best friend Aurora has turned out to be! :) Oh and I can't wait till Sunday to give Lucy the mini Snow White I found at another yard sale for $1. She's going to LOVE her! :D

CARS Birthday Cake

My son, Mack, turned one yesterday. So today we had his birthday party and we went ahead and did a CARS theme. Which is actually funny to me because we had a birthday party for Lucy when she turned one, but it didn't have a theme. Anyway- I wanted to make his cake, and I wanted to feel like it went with the theme, so here is my version of a CARS birthday cake. :)

It is pretty simple, so I don't think I really need to explain, but I will just in case anyone is wondering. Also, if I had had more time... and the proper tools- it would have looked much better, but I thought it turned out great all tings considered!

I made one round cake, I don't know the dimension I'm sorry- but I think an 8" pan and I made 12 cupcakes. After they were cooled I frosted the center in green frosting (which is actually white frosting with gel dye in it) to make the grass and then frosted the cupcakes with chocolate frosting to make the road. I had some gel frosting and I thought it would be cool to add some dimension to the "grass" but I didn't have any attachments so I made do with an ill fitted one, and that's what happened how I made the grass. Then I wanted to add the lines to the road, but once again had no tip, so I was forced to go without and that is why the lines are so thick. To finish it off I added a candle and 2 brand new CARS that came in a packaged deal with the movie we got for him. I didn't do anything to cover the wheels so I just had to spend a couple minutes wiping them down afterwards, it really wasn't bad. That being said- I think they added the perfect touch to the cake, and though my son didn't care at the time, the older boys at the party thought it was pretty great. If you make one like this, even if you make it a million times better I'd love to see!

Conversation Heart

This was my 3rd and final entry. It was obviously inspired by the upcoming holiday... I have all the stuff ready to make a second one that says QT Pie... But I am just making that so I have a set. This one was kind of tricky, especially because I made my binding by hand and I have never done that before, but I think it turned out pretty good. I love it though. The quilting on top was done mostly just freehand. I had drawn some lines with pencil, but they were hard to see and the foot got in the way so I just guessed most of the time. I think it turned out really good for a straight stitch.

Cupcake Pot Holder

This was the second pot holder I made for the contest. I didn't have matching binding so I decided to do a satin stitch. Over and over and over again. :) I think it made it a little wonky, but I still love it. Cupcakes are my favorite things to bake. <3 Oh, and the sprinkles went on after it was put together so there are a million criss crossing threads in there... But that can be our little secret. :)

Country Sliced Apple Pot Holder

One of my favorite craft blogs is hosting a contest to win one of 2 Brother sewing machines!! In order to enter, all you had to do was make a pot holder and then send in a picture. I thought about it for about 2 weeks before I got to this version of this idea. I was a little put off by the binding and then later realized that I should have basted the top to the bottom and then tried to attach the binding. That's what I get for not double checking the tutorial or using my brain. Anyway, in the end I think it turned out pretty good, and I think it will look awesome in my best friend Nikki's apple themed kitchen. I will post the amazing pictures Molly took to send in the next time I'm at her house... Or maybe sooner if I can figure it out on my phone. :)

Nursing cover and burp cloths

Though this is not my first attempt at burp cloths, it's definitely my favorite! I will add pictures of some of the other stuff I have been making sometime when I have internet on my computer. Anyway, this set I made for a lady that Mom knows in TX. She sent me the fabric and I made these and then sent them back. She sent a few other fabrics too, so I'll add photos as things are completed. I hope that the lady is as excited about the zebra as I am! ... If only Lucy where still a baby. ;)
